The Cinque Terre is a rugged portion of coast of the Ligurian Riviera located in the territory of the province of La Spezia between Punta Mesco and Punta di Montenero, in which there are five villages overlooking the sea: Monterosso al Mare, Vernazza, Corniglia, Manarola, Riomaggiore.
Since 1997 are part of the list of UNESCO World Heritage Site, thanks to them an exceptionally valuable cultural landscape which represents the harmonious interaction settled between man and nature to produce a landscape of exceptional quality, which manifests a way the millennial traditional life and continues to play a leading role in the socio-economic life of society.
Thanks to the geographical characteristics of the territory and anthropic where they arise, the Cinque Terre are considered one of the most striking sights of the Italian coast, for their context hilly topography naturally rough and bumpy, softened by the construction of terraces or bands for the crop, which falls into the sea with steep slopes; at the points where the sea creeps serpentinamente in the land rise the villages, articulated to follow the natural shape of the hills.
The work of man over the centuries has shaped the territory by building the famous terraces on slopes to the sea, due to the particular agricultural technique seeks to exploit as much as possible places steep slopes leading down to the sea, he has done so one of the most fascinating landscapes of Liguria.
It is recommended to visit the Cinque Terre by train that stops at all stations or by ferry that also leaves from Viareggio. Alternatively, it is recommended to reach La Spezia by car and park and then take the train that takes you to the Cinque Terre (there may be problems finding parking).
It is strongly discouraged to visit them by car.
BOAT EXCURSIONS TO CINQUE TERRE FROM VIAREGGIO AND FORTE DEI MARMI
The Consorzio Marittimo Turistico 5 Terre organizes sea excursions by boat to the Cinque Terre also departing from Viareggio and Forte dei Marmi from mid-June to mid-September, and within each of the five villages in Liguria for an entire day. The cost of the tour is 30 Euros.
