Levigliani, for example, is a small and charming village in the countryside, an ideal starting point for excursions to the Antro del Corchia, one of the largest karstic systems in the world.
The first historic traces of Stazzema date back to the 9th century, when the construction of the Church Santa Maria Assunta began. Restored in 1500s, it retains the architectural form of the thirteenth century. Inside the church there is, among other things, a fresco by the master Marcello Tommasi, considered the symbolic heir of the 1400s Neoplatonism.
Best known is the village of Sant’Anna. Located at the foot of Mount Gabberi in southern Apuan Alps, in Sant’Anna di Stazzema took place one of the most horrendous massacres by the Nazis in August 1944. Lest we forget, it has been erected a monument to Peace, as a symbol for mankind, and, in 1982 has been inaugurated the Historical Museum of Resistance, built on the old structure of the elementary schools of the country.
