itself is a popular holiday destination of around 30,000
inhabitants, 9km from the sea at Lido di Camaiore, and sitting at the
foot of the Apuan Alps, among Apuan Alps and the coast, in the centre of
Versilia. Historic centre is surrounded by walls and inside there are
many artisan shop. In the summer many traditional markets attract
craftsmen and traders from all Italy. There is the possibility to visit
the numerous medieval remains and to make an excursion to see the
ancient romanesque church of XII century.
These mountains run behind the Versilian coast, spanning 40kms, and are
now a protected regional park. Traversed by well-marked footpaths, these
provide a marvellous escape into nature for keen and amateur walkers
alike. There is a marvellous diversity of wild flowers, chestnut and
beech woods, and 300 species of wild bird including the golden eagle.
The Versilian Riviera Tuscany Italy
is a huge draw for Italians and visitors
alike, and Viareggio is Tuscany's major seaside resort, with an elegant
palm-fringed avenue running the length of the promenade. A collection of
Liberty style facades, designed by the leader of Italian art nouveau,
Galileo Chini, line this avenue.
And 25km away lies the marvellous mediaeval city of Lucca. This most
graceful of the Tuscan provincial capitals sits within a complete ring
of fifteenth century walls. Around these lie peaceful grassed gardens;
within lies a delightful labyrinth of a town, with its mediaeval
buildings still holding to the Roman street plan laid out two millennia
ago.
