The name, Versilia Golf, was given to the golf course at Forte dei Marmi in order to better identify it with the stretch of Tuscan coastline known as Versilia, which has been a holiday destination for generations spanning 50 years.
In fact, it is not precise to mention Forte dei Marmi alone, as the course is located in a sort of territorial "island" which belongs mostly to the City Council of Pietrasanta and only partly to the City Councils of Forte dei Marmi and Montignoso. This brings to mind the somewhat troubled history of the area where the eighteen championship holes designed by Marco Croze are now located.
Even the address itself - via della Sipe 100 - is significant: during the first world war (1915/1918), this area was home to the factory of the Società Italiana Prodotti Esplodenti (S.I.P.E. - Italian Explosive Products Company) which was closed a few years later following an explosion, and the so called "pill-boxes" that are situated at the
crossing points between holes 5, 8, 13 and 14 and today used as storage sheds for the lawn maintenance machines, were actually at one time powder magazines.
In fact, during the First World War the area was also used as an airfield, but at the end of the war it fell into a long period of disuse, eventually turning into a morass.
It was only in the late 1970s that the owners - the Perioli family - decided to regenerate the land and turn it into a golf course.
However, another ten years went by before the necessary authorizations to build the golf course were obtained, and the credit for this goes largely to Rolando Cecchi Pandolfini, Mayor of Pietrasanta at the time, who worked hard to resolve the situation, realising the value that this venture would bring to the area.
Versilia Golf opened on the 22nd June 1990 and as one might imagine, it did not even bear a vague resemblance to the way that it appears today.
The early years required a lot of hard work to enable the growth of this new "creation", but as of 1998 - which is when Mr Paolo Ottani took over with N.C.H. S.p.A on expiry of contracts - things changed.
In actual fact, before this date the Golf course was run exclusively by the sports association, while the joint-stock company took care of the leasing of the hotel and clubhouse.
In 1998 the company structure changed and Mr Paolo Ottani became Chief Executive of Versilia Golf S.p.A and President of the sports association (Versilia Golf Club).
Currently, NCH Immobili S.p.A, (owned by the Ottani family) has majority shareholding of Versilia Golf S.p.A, while N.C.H. S.p.A - Italian leader in software solutions for Bancomat, POS, Credit Cards, RNI and the SWIFT Network - is the course official sponsor. Every decision that is made concerning the golf club is based upon a certain philosophy which reflects the entrepreneurial spirit of N.C.H. S.p.A.
The new ownership has invested a significant amount in Versilia Golf: in the last three years the lawn has been improved, all the vehicles have been up-graded, the sheds have been renovated, and hole 13 has been re-designed by the well-known Spanish company IGD (Integral Golf Design) belonging to José Maria Olazàbal.
At present, the entrepreneur is dedicating himself to several large projects for the future that have been in progress since the beginning of 2003.
The final objective is the creation of an elegant and luxurious hotel structure and beauty farm with fitness centre.
